Why It Matters, How It’s Done, and What Skipping It Can Cost You
If you’ve ever looked up at a solar installation and assumed it was just “panels bolted to a roof,” there’s a lot more going on underneath. Before a single panel goes up, a solar company should be creating a detailed map — a blueprint of exactly how the array will be positioned, wired, and connected to your home or business. That process is called solar array mapping, and it’s one of the most important — and most overlooked — steps in a solar project.
What Solar Array Mapping Actually Is
Solar array mapping is the process of planning, designing, and documenting the full layout and configuration of a solar power system before, during, and after installation. It’s part engineering, part paperwork, and part insurance policy for the decades the system will spend on your roof.
It typically involves five stages:
1. Site Assessment
Before anything is designed, the installer needs to evaluate the physical site — available roof or ground space, orientation (which direction the array faces), tilt angle, and anything that could cast shade on the panels, like trees, chimneys, or neighboring structures. Get this wrong, and you can end up with panels producing far less power than they should for the system’s entire lifespan.
2. Design and Layout
This is where the installer decides exactly how many panels fit, how they’re arranged (rows, columns, spacing), and the angle that maximizes sun exposure. A well-designed layout balances maximum energy production against the practical constraints of the roof — structural load limits, fire-code setbacks, and equipment placement.
3. Electrical Planning
Panels don’t just sit there — they’re wired together and connected through inverters to either the electrical grid or a battery storage system. This stage calculates expected energy output and makes sure every wire, breaker, and inverter meets current electrical code. This is also where an installer plans for future serviceability — or fails to.
4. Documentation and Mapping
This is the step most people never see, but it’s the one that matters most years down the road: creating actual diagrams — schematics, site plans, and technical drawings — that show both the physical layout and the electrical wiring of the array. Think of it as the “as-built” record of the system.
5. Permitting and Compliance
Finally, the design has to be submitted to local authorities to confirm it meets zoning laws, building codes, and utility interconnection requirements, and the necessary permits have to be secured before installation.
Why It’s Important
Array mapping isn’t just red tape — it directly affects three things:
- Efficiency — A properly mapped array is designed to squeeze the most energy possible out of the available space and sun exposure.
- Safety — Electrical planning done right means the system won’t overload circuits, create fire risk, or violate code.
- Long-term serviceability — This is the piece people don’t think about until it bites them.
Where Getting It Wrong Gets Expensive
Here’s the part that doesn’t get talked about enough: most solar systems outlive the company that installed them. Installers go out of business, get acquired, or the technician who did the work simply moves on. Years later, when something needs maintenance, repair, or an upgrade — like adding battery storage — the new technician needs to know how the array is wired and configured.
If proper documentation and mapping wasn’t done at installation, or wasn’t kept, a technician may have to remap the entire system from scratch before they can safely touch it. That means:
- Physically inspecting and tracing wiring runs panel by panel instead of referencing a diagram
- Additional labor hours billed just to reconstruct information that should already exist
- Delays in diagnosing and fixing problems, which is especially costly if the system is down and not producing power (i.e., you’re paying full price for grid electricity in the meantime)
- In some cases, having to open up sealed junctions or roof penetrations that a good map would have let a technician avoid entirely
IMPORTANT: skipping proper mapping and documentation up front doesn’t save money — it just defers the cost, with interest, to whoever has to service the system later. That’s often the homeowner, since re-mapping fees typically aren’t covered under a warranty from an installer who’s no longer around.
